That confirmed it, then. Peskers didn't just have a screw loose—a whole drawer of tools was rattling about in that head.
"I don't want yer stinkin' pity money!" Spender shouted after the fleeing ferret. He sat down on the dock and began shoveling the coins into his trouser pockets. Just because he didn't want it didn't mean he wasn't going to take it. Half a pound was half a pound. And it kind of made up for what he paid for his chocolate.
Ooh, maybe he could go buy more...
But Ixtapa hadn't stolen his money! She'd stopped him from spending it all, yes, but she'd pushed it back to him. And he'd put it in his pockets. He'd heard it rattling about during that first fight. Right up until he charged blindly at Peskers by the sea wall. That was when he lost it all!
How deep was the water? It couldn't have been that deep. Shores sloped, right? It wasn't just a huge drop-off... was it? If it wasn't a huge drop-off, then how did all those ships come so close? Hmmm.
Well, half a pound was half a pound, but a whole pound was a whole pound, and he was pantless and distraught. It was a no-brainer, which was perfect, because this was Spender we're talking about.
Wrapping his trousers up, he left them in a pile and slipped into the water. Ooh, and here was a post under the dock! Perfect, he could use that to climb up faster.
The ferret splished down.
A minute passed.
And then, a triumphant paw broke the surface, clutching a shilling. He placed it under his trousers and went down again.
This... was actually kind of fun!
If he managed to get all his money back, he could buy chocolate and a wagon to carry it in.
