"Milton!?," Sciurus exclaimed, now breaking out into a grin. "Yes, I believe some creature told me of his previous post. A creature with a little more experience should do suit us fine, Otto. We do make up quite the odd team, though, as you said - but we're the only creatures who can now finally bring about some justice."
The squirrel stood up, his curiosity piqued. He followed his otter friend over to the bookshelf. "You've been scouring those letters then, I see. What finds you have come up with! Thirty-three things - by my whiskers! I'll make sure to be well prepared for this, certainly, for we certainly have enough evidence now. Just need to present it, is all."
The bushy-tailed rodent rubbed his paws. "Can't wait to see this, if I'm honest. The prospect of seeing Augustine's crimes finally catch up with him is something I truly relish, and we are going to be absolutely piling it on, believe me. It's going to be a public trial then. That's good, for the general multitude should see our former monarch exposed as a traitorous, lying coward."

"Aye that it would be, yes. The public should know I think...and this way Brissoe and his companions would be less inclined to try and attack us every step of the way. The populace supports our points of view, not theirs after all." The otter was moving some books aside, picking up loose sheafs of paper and trying to determine where he had stashed it...aha!
"Ah here we are!" he exclaimed, pulling the folded list off the shelf and pawing it over to Sciurus. "In there are things we've gathered from the letters. Bribes he's sent out, atrocities he's committed, and just things that overall he broke the law on. He was supposed to disband the Scarlet Guard after all and we all know the end result of that. He tried to limit the size of our army, he was consorting with his cousins in exile, and he was of course consulting with foreign monarchs to try and suppress the Revolution."
Heading back over to his chair now, the otter leaned back against it, smiling in more of a relaxed manner now. "You're right. We need to focus our energies on this trial and dealing with Augustine. Tyranny must never be allowed to rear it's head over this land. Rosferia is forever free."
Looking about him as if remembering some last minute details, a more lighter tone passed over his features. "As a matter of fact I'm planning on seeing somebeast special tonight to help me with my problems. I recommend you get to seeing Milton and Cutter as soon as possible. Thank you for dropping by of course. Is there anything else you wished to discuss with me friend?" the hypnotist asked now, sniffling a bit due to the colder temperatures rolling in for winter. There was at present no fire going in his hearth, and thus his house was a little on the chilly side but wasn't too bad as of yet.

"That's good to hear," Sciurus replied as he sat back down, list in paw. "The general multitude would be of a more moderate viewpoint on certain matters, as we are, and they should side with us I think. What we should do, if at all possible, is call a temporary kind of truce with Brissoe and company. We're on the same side in this, after all, and it will dominate everything for the guts of a month, so why not let's work with common interests?"
The squirrel sat back down and began to look over the list. Many raised eyebrows and sharp intakes of breath, as well as some tutting and shakes of the head, issued from the bushy-tailed rodent. "I must admit that I am shocked that Augustine would sttop to such things as these - though not at all surprised, as this confirms something I have long suspected: that our former monarch is a creature devoid of any sense of right of wrong."
The hypnotist wondered what his otter friend would make of all this. Augustine surely had to pay for these crimes, and the squirrel would do everything in his power to make sure that justice prevailed.

Otto shook his head, preferring to stand as he figured their meeting was almost at an end, but he didn't say anything when the squirrel sat down again, namely because he brought up a good point. But the otter knew as much as most of the Mountain that an alliance with Brissoe was highly unlikely.
"Keep in mind Sciurus that Brissoe and the Girondins don't even want to bring our former King to trial. They wish to see him as our hostage for as long as possible, and would argue against killing him. They would make the statement that doing so would only bring down the rest of the monarchies against us. While this may be true and it may not, I can see the positives as well. Some nations like Welkin might just be in for a revolution themselves, whilst other nations like Ferlusan would I'm sure be strongly against the death of Augustine."
Sighing, the hypnotist turned legislator just didn't believe such a thing were possible as it were. "I think Brissoe and his compatriots would stand their ground. You may attempt to call for a truce, but keep in mind I already tried that and their answer was no. More drastic steps may be necessary in the future." were Otto's words now.
"As for Augustine I see a creature who has struggled to hold onto his shrinking power, but most of that was at the expense of his own citizens. While personally a beast who meant to do well, the King was also indecisive and would sway back and forth between trying to support both the royalists and the revolutionaries, and ultimately sided with those he hoped would restore him to his seat of power. That must never be allowed to happen at this rate....or the reprisals would indeed by tremendous for us." he said gravely.

"Tremendous is not the word, my otter friend," the squirrel replied, nodding sagely. "If such a thing were to happen, conspirators and supporters of our cause would be put to death as soon as could be arranged."
Sciurus shivered. Realising what consequences lay in store for certain actions always sent a shiver up his spine. He could hardly believe how much things had changed over the course of the last year, but decided that the positives of his new life in Cosnair far outweighed the negatives.
"Well, that idea involving Brissoe and company has been suitably dealt with now, I must say," he muttered. "Would that we could work together for a time, but it seems that our differences are just too great to be simply cast aside. It's a shame, really, as some of those Girondins are real bright sparks; any creature can see that.
Then, the bushy-tailed creature remembered something. "You asked if there was anything else I wished to discuss with you. I can't think of anything, but I need to sort out some more permanent accommodation, I think. Come the end of the trial and the verdict, I'll look into securing something, I reckon. New year, new start. For many of us. And now I should put the same question to you: anything else you might like to talk about?"

"Yes....which is why we must not fail and allow Augustine back on his throne." Otto said with a direct stare. No way could they allow that. They were a permanent republic now, and Otto would fight to keep it that way. They couldn't go back. They had to rough it out. They were in the fight of their lives now, and they had to prove to the other monarchies of the continent that they were not backing down.
"Yes...the Girondins most certainly are smart...but they're greedy as well, being business beasts and all that. As for what else to discuss....no I don't think so. The trail is soon, so I suggest we focus on that. Oh and about lodgings....since I own three homes you're welcome to stay here with me or in one of the other ones, though they're on the outskirts of the city in the countryside. Longer commute to work. I figured it's the least I could do to share my what I have."
The otter was offering because he felt bad about simply owning so much, and he knew his friend would need a place to stay now that he was in an inn. He'd been here long enough after all....should have some more permanent lodgings.

Sciurus was visibly taken aback at this offer from his friend. The squirrel's blue eyes widened at Otto's suggestion. The rodent needed to think little about his response. "You would offer me a place to stay!? Why, this is a most generous offer, my friend. I would like nothing better than to take advantage of such an opportunity, if you wouldn't mind. I think here would suit me best, as it's in a central location," was his reply. He was smiling broadly now. "Thanks, mate. I really do appreciate it. I'll make sur to return the davour in any way I can, should you need assistance with anything, for instance."
The squirrel locked eyes with his mustelid companion again. "As you said, we are in this for the long haul now, and we must press ahead with our ideas. Put everything behind them, for it's pretty much all we can do at the moment. I have made my decision for certain now: I will sit as a prosecutor against Augustine starting Friday." The bushy-tailed creature nodded decisively as he stood up, watching as Otto did likewise.
The two shook paws. Slight tears could be seen in the rodent hypnotist's eyes. Truth be told, he was unused to such generosity. Then, Sciurus left, closing the door behind him, smiling from ear to ear as he stepped out into the bitterly cold December night. His coat of fur kept him warm as he headed back to the inn. He would take stock of his belongings, and then move in with Otto at the beginning of next week.
He was looking forward to that... but it paled in comparison to his excitement at the prospect of the trial, which was coming closer by the day. The time would soon be at paw, and it thrilled the squirrel when he thought of the part he would play. It would be a long and taxing month ahead, but he was ready.
