Saumarez's understanding of Ferlusanian was limited, but he could tell what she was saying. Quite negative, it only caused him to sob further. "I'm sorry...I'm sorry...I'm sorry..." he said to her, sobbing the words out in Common and making them sound contorted and anguished. "Forgive me...forgive me..."
He was aware of others standing over him now. Looking up with a cracked face, the weasel could see Ladorak Fugate, Molly Serra, Admirals Hood, Gravina and Langara, as well as Roland Steep, who seemed quite perturbed, though his face gradually relaxed upon seeing the situation. "Ha!" Langara exclaimed, smirking. "Seems our two engaged weasels can't keep their paws off each other! A thousand pardons to the engaged, but we assumed something...else was going on up here." the zorilla stated, grinning.
"Erm...no...actually." Saumarez pushed Steep off of him, standing up hurriedly and brushing his uniform off. He knew she was not in her uniform anymore...and this was highly embarrassing to him. "That's not...well...she tried to..." But then he stopped, looking down at the obviously distressed jill. Despite his wish to expose her as a suicidal lunatic and have this marriage called off here and now, he found his heart breaking and his will unable to carry out the task.
He couldn't do that to her. If he denounced her and had her committed...he'd be living up to what she wanted and expected, to be thrown out by everyone around her and rejected. Despite him resenting her right now, and wishing he had just let her go, he found himself unable to break her. He could crush her right now, and declare her mentally unfit for this marriage, something the other Admirals would probably agree with. But he couldn't do that...he found his lips unable to form words, and instead attempted to defend her.
"She was...trying to...um...that is...we were just talking. I...we ended up getting a bit carried away I guess...I'm terribly sorry." he shuddered, and sank to one knee before the assemblage. "Admiral Hood...though I serve under Admiral Howe and not your command, forgive me. My conduct is most unbecoming of an officer of my rank. If you wish to report this..." He stopped here. He couldn't say this! He'd ruin his career and spend the rest of his life ashore, without a glimmer of hope of employment! He couldn't do this! He couldn't defend her like this! She was worth nothing to him after all. He couldn't throw away his future for her!
Shove this! He'd get her committed and out of his life! He'd give that ring to Dorothea as soon as he returned and they would wed, regardless of the consequences. Shove Priscilla Steep and her pathetic insistence on dying! She wasn't worth this! But...ultimately...it would contradict Saumarez's code of conduct towards jills, and jacks never, under any circumstances, threw jills away like that. Their honor was always defended at all costs. Even...even at the expense of one's career and one's future. He silently cursed his father and his morals under his breath as he continued.
"If you wish to report this to Admiral Howe...feel free to do so." That was it...the end of his career. Cavorting about with his fiancee in public...it would be the death axe of his career. His head would roll and he would be finished. He would have nothing...all over this stupid jill.
Hood regarded him with that angular snout of his and those hawkish eyes; a real predatory bird studying his next meal. For a moment, nothing was said. Trembling, the weasel captain kept his bended knee and his head bowed. After a moment, the opossum smiled thinly. "I can't say I blame you for getting swept up in the passion of the moment James. I'll overlook this I think. You can hardly be blamed, given the circumstances. Admiral Howe need not know about this. I'd say we can keep this little incident between ourselves."
Saumarez was too weak to stand at this news. The relief was indescribable. It was like he had just killed someone and had been let go. Or had been caught committing an infidelity and had been given a slap on the wrist. It was incredible. Breathing out a sigh, the weasel nodded, and slowly got to his shaking footpaws.
"Let's come back inside then, and continue our meal." Langara suggested, motioning for them all to head inside. Saumarez stayed back, making sure Steep rose and didn't try anything regretful. He didn't look at her, only sadly went to retrieve his ring from where it had fallen on the deck. His heart was cracking, shattering like glass that cut him deeply inside. Never...he could never be with Dorothea now, as his life was being given to this...horrendous situation.
Reaching a trembling paw to the deck, his fingers enclosed the golden band, and he felt the life go out of him. This was the end. The end of the relationship. He would have to give her up for Steep, a creature he cared little for at this point in time. Standing up, he did not turn to face them, instead looking back out the stern of the Conception. "Go ahead...I'll be down in a minute please." He waited silently for them to depart.
