Chaos. Murder. Blood. There was no real other way to describe. The streets were descending into chaos...again. It seemed the people of Cosnair were a hard lot to please. This time it was the prisons that were a target of their wrath. Prisoners were being dragged out into the streets and cut down in order to better "safeguard" the capital. Minister of Justice Otto Kurtz was attempting to deal with things, but as it were they out of his and everyone else's paws. The Legislative Assembly was daily being scared off from even coming into work, and thus it was difficult to say WHO was really in charge of the nation right now.
The sooner they got out of here, the better...at least in Montegu Sylver's mind. They were SO close to recovering the Crown Jewels and wrapping this case up. They could go home soon. Back to Welkin....back to where Monty belonged. Too long he'd spent in this nation, and he was weary of it. The Rosferians were very passionate about everything they did....and it was really dragging him down. Give him dull old Muggidrear any day. Cosnair was just too chaotic for his liking.
Checking his double-barreled pistol and sighing, he shoved it into his cloak pocket. Sveltlana and most assuredly Spindrick would be lurking out there. To say nothing of the renegade crowds. They had narrowed down the location of the Crown Jewels to a warehouse close to the river Trist, fortunately on the other side of where the rioting was going on. They had to move quickly though, before Spindrick moved the jewels. He knew they had taken his personal baggage, and thus knew everything about his plans, or at least most of them. Who the buyer was was still a mystery.
Exiting his hotel room, the weasel moved next door to Miri's door. Rapping a few times upon it, Monty called to within. "Jis Talian? It's Jal Sylver. Are you just about ready to go" he asked, ready for the new day.

Miri rose and stretched out the sore muscles in her back. It seems that taking flying leaps and being beat upon did not agree with her back at all…
Miri meandered about her room for a while, loosening up and getting dressed and ready for the day. After a while, she heard Monty calling at the door. She grabbed her pack, weapons, and a list that she had been working on before she went to bed. It contained a list of beasts she thought were possible buyers for the Jewels, but for now she just shoved it in her pouch, she wanted something to eat first.
Miri yanked the door open and strode into the hall. “Here Boss, lets move, I want to get home as soon as possible.” She rubbed her shoulder, “This place gives me the creeps, way to many hot heads.”

"Agreed. The Rosferians seem to act on their emotions far more than those from Welkin do. This place needs a good whipping of civilization into it I think." Of course, Monty's comment WAS narrow minded, though there was truth behind it too. He was, like a typical Welkinite, very proud of his heritage after all. Welkin had a long and successful history on the world stage, though it wasn't clear which nation at present would be labeled as the pre-eminent world power.
"So I figure we'll talk on the way." the weasel detective said, leading the way out of the hotel and out into the streets. They would avoid the crowds this time, and do their best to make their way to the warehouse without incident. It would be tricky, but Monty was learning the insides and outs of the city, and felt confident he could navigate it efficiently now.
"There was something I've been meaning to ask you after all." the detective spoke to his comrade. "I've been wondering just how long you've been doing what you do, and what you like most about it." He was multitasking right now, preparing to listen to her and thinking back to the insurrection. Sveltlana....would she be out today? Also, the fact that the Gradvar armies were across the border caused Monty some alarm. He wanted to be out of here before they arrived. They would probably respect his foreign citizenship, and Gradvar and Welkin WERE technically allies, though Monty was going to take no chances for their sojourn here. Best to just get the jewels and wrap this case up.

Miri started a bit, none of her employers had ever asked anything about what she had done in the past, or anything about the job, except what she was good at when it came to getting things back. She turned toward him, “Well, this is new, no one’s asked me that before…” She moved over to the other side of him, avoiding a beast who had walked in her way.
“Um, well I’ve been apprenticed since I was 10, and graduated around 15, started taking jobs on my own at 16.” She turned to look at him again. “And what I like best about it….” She trailed off, stopping because of the commotion that had developed between a male and his apparent companion. She wanted to do something else, and he, all 6’4 deckworker of him, had been drinking. The anger in his eyes evident as he struck the femme full across the face. “Excuse me just a moment Boss, I’ll be right back…” Her voice trailed off dangerously at the end.
Miri approached him from behind as his paw went up for a second strike. Getting a running start up a nearby crate, she landed square on his shoulders, knocking him off balance as she jumped off of him, spinning and kicking him in the chin as she came down. Miri landed heavily, favoring her right paw for a moment as she backed up. He seemed to be shaking off the daze, so she spun, planting a hard kick in the stomach. He staid out of it this time. Smiling at the girl she wiped her paws and waved, walking back to were Monty was.
Miri was still limping slightly as she approached him. “You can see I’m good, but as to what I like best….” She simply smiled and jerked a thumb* at the fallen beast, choosing not to spell it out for him. She had found out that he liked to figure things out for himself. Miri reached down and rubbed her footpaw. “Boss, do you think we could find a place to sit down for a minute?” She grimaced “That beast has a chin made of rock.”

Monty watched her with a studious expression on his face. Alright then Jis Talian....be my guest, he thought to himself. He folded his arms around his chest, looping the cane's head about his arm and watching her do her work. He didn't cringe, and he didn't mind what she did at all. Such beasts like that deserved no such mercy in a fight. They had already fought dirty by beating jills, and thus fellow Monty had no sympathy.
Miri dispatched him with a graceful leap off of a crate and onto his back, then clocked him in the chin. Finally, she delivered the coup de grace with a kick to the stomach that sent the jack sprawling and unable to get back up. Now this was the sort of thing that caught Monty's interest. A jill who wasn't afraid to go for broke and stand up for what she believed in. Many jills were oppressed by society, but Miri really didn't seem to consign herself to such a mentality.
Abuse in the streets and in the household was something you saw everywhere too. It wasn't just confined to Rosferia. It occurred in Welkin as well as on the continent. You couldn't really escape it....except maybe in Mossflower, but they were less of an organized bunch than this section of the planet.
"Sure thing Jis Talian." he said, finally breaking into a smile. "Let's sit down for a bit." He walked forward a bit, trying to scope a suitable spot out. He finally decided to settle on the embankment that ran along the river. It was stone and would make a good seat, so long as one didn't lean too far back.
It was now that the weasel was sitting that he wanted to speak to Miri about some things...get to know his employee better. After all, they had really only been working together for the better part of a year, and he still hadn't come to know much if anything beyond what he'd initially learned in their first meeting. He had purposely kept to himself on the voyage here, as he wasn't a very sociable creature. The closest he came was striking up a lively chat with Lord Hannover Haukin at the Jumping Jacks Club back in Muggidrear. He really HAD no friends outside of his tight knit circle of Bryony, Scruff, Maudlin, and Hannover.
"So tell me, Jis Talian...if I can be so bold. No, actually, forgive me. I won't be so bold. At least not without your permission." he said, closing his eyes and setting his cane up against the embankment. "Do you mind talking about your personal life, or is that something you'd rather keep behind closed lips?" he asked, smiling slightly now as he opened his eyes. "It's just, we've been working together for the better chunk of 1792, and yet I found I never really engaged you in any sort of real conversation. I respect your privacy too of course." he said, his smile growing, not wanting to force anything if it didn't want to give.

Miri limped slightly over to the embankment, sitting carefully so she wouldn't fall in. She was rubbing her footpaw when Monty asked about her... personal life? Her head jerked up at that. No beast had asked that in a good long time. In fact, last beast had been her cousin when he wanted some money off of her... Miri studied his face for a few moments, then decided he meant it.
Miri leaned down to continues rubbing her paw. "Ask away Boss, as long as you realize that I reserve the right to not answer a question." She looked back up at him, her eye's reflecting a slightly cloudy blue, showing the fact that she was curious about why he asked, but guarded about memories he might stir.

"Of course Jis Talian, feel free to not answer and otherwise ignore me altogether." he said, nodding slowly as if in confirmation of his own words. The sounds of the street fighting could be heard off in the distance, but it wasn't nearly as close as they had been to it a few nights ago.
"Well....I guess there were several things on my mind first and foremost...and most beasts would start with your past, ask you where you came from, what sort of family you grew up in, what life you led coming of age.....but I'm actually going to skip past all of that. There was something I was rather curious about in fact, and figured I would cut right to the chase."
It was something Monty himself was normally least concerned with, but in this instance, his curiosity had been sparked by Miri's pawdling of that jack just a few moments ago. "Was wondering.....since it's something I rarely if ever think about myself....have you ever had a significant jack in your life? If not at some point in the past then how about now?" he asked, not looking at her and instead directing his attention to some shop goers who were quickly buying goods across the street, wanting to go as fast as possible so they could get off the streets and into the safety of their homes.
He kept his eyes forward, watching the buyers so as not to upset Miri. He narrowed his eyes a bit, but that was the only visible action of the weasel at the moment.

Miri felt her breath catch in her throat, barely able to maintain her composer. She waited a moment, allowing her paw to reach up and stroke the band on her upper left arm, just as soon as she knew she wouldn’t let to much emotion show(or so she hoped), she said, “At one time there was, but I’d rather you not press any further on that one, Boss.”
Miri watched beasts go by for a few minutes, not really seeing them. After a little, a glint returned to her eyes. “You know Boss, is this question thing a two way street?” She turned to him, “That would only be fair, you ask a question I get to ask one.” Her eye’s were clearing from cloudy to clear as she pushed the memories out, indulging in her own curiosity about her new employer.

Of course, the wily detective noticed at once her paw brushing up against the ribbon on her left arm....the one she kept close to her heart. His guess was right then. She DID have someone special....but that was not something she wanted to go into. What was the mystery behind this mysterious jack? Who was he and what sort of impact had he had on Jis Talian? Was he dead now? Still alive?
"Oh? A question you wish to ask of me? You mean like a quid pro quo type deal? Hmm.....certainly Jis Talian." Monty agreed to this request, nodding now as he kept his arms folded and his eyes studying the crowds. "Like you, I can't guarantee I'll answer the question fully, but I'll try and answer to the best of my abilities."
He wasn't sure why he wanted to be secretive about this as well, but well....he just didn't want others knowing every little detail about himself. He liked keeping some things inside. But he wouldn't mind answering regular questions though with her. It was no big deal to him at this rate if she found a few thing out. Why not? "Go ahead Jis Talian.

Miri smiled a bit, "Well, I have three, and they all kinda lead into each other." She stood, stretching. "One, how long have you been a detective, why are you one, and what is your favorite part of the job?" Miri looked around the square again. "O, and Boss," she turned to him "Shouldn't we be moving on?" She reached up and rubbed her sore shoulder. "Sooner we find those jewels, sooner we go home!" ((sorry about the shortness, and abruptness... time running low ))
