OK, so all newcomers should check this out. This is the 1792 year in review for this place. We're over a year old now so congratulations everyone! Thanks for sticking with it! These are the major recaps for what's been happening this year and will be the most up to date info you can find.
The year started off with Rosferia in a Constitutional Monarchy status, with King Augustine XVI serving at the head of the Legislative Assembly. In January hostilities were growing between Rosferia and her traditional enemies, Gradvar and Kostritz however. Both nations had vaguely threatened the nation with military action if Augustine be any more disgraced. A build up of an emigrant army (made up of Rosferian nobility that had fled Rosferia and set up armed groups) was quickly dispersed by Gradvar however on the request of Rosferia, and war was averted, namely because at the time Gradvar wanted to focus on gaining territory from its neighbor, Kradowska.
However all was not right with the world. Rosferia felt that Kostritz's stance was too hostile, as they were supposed to have a military alliance with them. So Rosferia presented an ultimatum to Kostritz. Either honor our alliance or face war. Rosferia was resentful of this alliance, as they felt Kostritz was the superior partner and Kostritz and Rosferia have been long standing enemies for decades before this treaty.
The ultimatum was put on hold however as the Kostritz Emperor, Leopold, passed away suddenly in March. His young son Francis acceded to the throne, and promptly rejected Rosferia's ultimatum, claiming that Kostritz was now allied with Gradvar. In consequence of this, Rosferia declared war on Kostritz, but suffered minor defeats when their chaotic army marched north to invade Mordenz. A small amount of Kostritz border guards managed to scatter the Rosferian advance, and put them into a state of reorganization of their armed forces.
Gradvar, honoring their shaky alliance with Kostritz, declared war on Rosferia and had to make the bulk of the preparations to invade, as Kostritz had internal strife and is an enormous empire, thereby ensuring it would take a very long time for it's forces to mobilize.
In the meantime, as Gradvar was gathering it's army, unrest continued in Cosnair, the capital of Rosferia, and the Legislative Assembly continually clashed with the King over the passing of laws. It got so bad that the citizens stormed the King's palace and demanded he drop his vetoes, which, in great peril to his life, the King refused to do. But the Assembly went over his head and began passing the laws anyways, regardless of what the King said.
Things came to a head when General Ferdinand, the commander of Gradvar's army, issued his manifesto saying that Rosferia should not resist his invasion lest their cities be destroyed and Cosnair torched if the King's palace were entered forcibly again. The only result this had was the August 10th Insurrection, when the Cosnair population rose up, and 30,000 strong marched on Augustine's palace to overthrow him. Augustine's elite Scarlet Guards resisted, but most were massacred and overpowered, being outnumbered nearly 30 to 1. Augustine was taken prisoner and confined in an ancient fortress, the Temple, his powers in suspension.
The Legislative Assembly was dissolved, most of its members having melted away in terror at the pending Gradvar invasion and mob rule in the streets of Cosnair, and consequently a replacement legislative body was formed, the National Convention, which serves as Rosferia's present government. Their job will be to decide what to do with Augustine and draft up a new constitution for the nation.
The storming of the Winter Palace had another effect, and Gradvar swiftly launched an invasion to safeguard Augustine. Moving ponderously thanks to a long supply train, the Gradvar forces under Duke Ferdinand and King Frederick of Gradvar captured the vital border fortresses of Longwy and Dumont, but taking Frederick's hasty advice, Ferdinand advanced upon Cosnair before he was ready. Meeting the Rosferian army on the plains of Valmy, Ferdinand had his supply line cut and after only a half-hearted attempt to retrieve it, decided to end his invasion and retreat back to Gradvar. The stunning success at Valmy created heroes of the Rosferian generals of Kellerman and Duross, and gave Rosferia the initiative.
Pushing into Calgary, Gradvar, and Eastern Mordenz, Rosferian armies have so far been victorious on all fronts. The Army of the South conquered much of western Calgary, and incorporated it peacefully into Rosferia. The invasion of Gradvar by Count Adam Custine has gone well too. Advancing to the Trine River, the Rosferians have taken Mainz, a vital border fortress, and sit there with Ferdinand's army close by, and fighting is expected to resume in the spring of next year.
In the north was the greatest success however. General Duross, believing the key to winning this conflict lies in securing Mordenz as an ally, has pushed into Eastern Mordenz, his progress simple as this section of the nation lacks border fortresses. Mordenz, a country under Kostritz occupation, was grateful for the liberating forces under Duross, and Duross met the Kostritz Occupation Forces led by the Kostritz Governor of Mordenz, Duke Albert, on the ridge outside Jemappes.
Throwing themselves forward, the ill trained Rosferian volunteers used numbers and had luck on their side, managing to pierce the Kostritz line and force them completely back into Gradvar, giving Duross all of Eastern Mordenz as his prize.
Much of the fighting will now occur outside Rosferia, as Kostritz has mobilized it's main army under the Prince Josias, and are looking to reclaim Eastern Mordenz and push on into Rosferia from the north if they can. Duross, for his part, plans on invading Western Mordenz to liberate that section of the country as well, and obtain a military alliance with Mordenz, which has a sizable navy that Rosferia could use.
On the Gradvar front, said nation must concentrate on containing the Rosferian invasion and pushing them back if at all possible.
The other nations of the continent may get involved in the conflict yet. Welkin is said to be gearing up for war and pouring funds into the Empire of Kostritz to keep it afloat and allow it to field its armies. Ferlusan, to the south of Rosferia, increases it's protests over the treatment of Augustine, who has recently been brought to trial before the National Convention on charges of treason. Delorn is expected to remain neutral, as their business with Kradowska is not finished yet, and Empress Catherine is looking to divide up Kradowska between herself and King Frederick of Gradvar.
Rosferia is now a republic, and faces new challenges in the year ahead....
And thus we are about to move into 1793....may you all have a great Christmas, a happy new year, and many more good threads to come!
