Augustine had not gone crazy, though he was lost within his own thoughts for the moment. He watched as Otto began leading the squirrel towards the door. "Farewell Mr. Whirlpaw....may you live a better life than I." the King spoke in a very detached voice as Sciurus and Otto disappeared from view and the doors were shut by the guards. Wiping his brow with a paw, Augustine removed the cap and sank heavily down into his chair. His normally poised paws were shaking now, and it was clear he was glad to have made it out of that situation in one piece.
The crowd was speaking amongst themselves now as they made their way down the ornate hallways, being carefully watched the Scarlet Guard as they headed for the front door. "Who needs the King anyways? We'll just have the Commune enforce the rule against the clergy, and we'll have them pressure the Assembly into calling out the National Guard anyways. We WILL have our armed camp if the popular will so demands it!" Milton was exclaiming, and received cheers and plaudits. He saw no reason to bow to the King's will anyways. If the Assembly wanted their rules enforced, then they would be enforced by the growing power of the Commune, whether the King liked it or not.
They made their way out into the humid, hot sunlight, and some started assuring the crowd that they had given the King a good scare, though in the end he had refused to drop his vetoes. The crowd seemed displeased with this, but they were getting hot and sticky and didn't really feel like waiting around any longer out here if they couldn't get in to the palace. Slowly, they began melting away back into the city, going this way and that, some grumbling, some laughing, and they all went their separate ways towards home or work or wherever they wanted to go.
Boneparte, who had been outside the whole time, was rather furious with the situation. "What a weak kitten the King has shown himself to be!" he fumed. "Why he could have gotten rid of this crowd so easily! Instead he invites them in to his own home! If I had been in his shoes well this mob would have been dispersed with a few well aimed volleys of the Scarlet Guard!" he was speaking to no beast in particular, but could hardly contain himself as he rushed forward, pointing at some of the Scarlet Guard who were beginning to disperse as well.
"Hey! Hey! Yeah you! You guys!" he cried out to them, spittle flying from his mouth. "What's the point of having an elite unit like you guys around if the King won't even use you!? Well!?" he demanded, though they spoke not a word in reply to him. They were too professional to do that, and never spoke to the populace unless they had explicit permission to do so.
To Boneparte, this was a show of the King's weakness in front of his own people. Why he would let them push him around like that was beyond him, and he merely shook his head and threw his paws up in disgust. What a farce this was! Not that he supported the King....he hated him...hated him with a passion....but such a situation could have easily been prevented! He wanted a strong government after all....and not a weak monarch who was willing to negotiate rather than show who was in charge. Noticing Sciurus again, the Lieutenent went up to him.
"Hey....Sciurus...it's me....Lieutenant Lantzer....remember?" he asked him, shoving his paws into his pockets. "How did it go in there? What happened?" he queried the squirrel now, curious as to what had gone on behind the closed doors.
