In a rather surprising turn of events on Saturday, June 20th, a large crowd of close to 6,000 beasts descended on King Augustine's palace in order to demand that the King drop his vetoes and recall his Ministers. Some of the crowd entered into the Legislative Assembly's building and browbeat them for a few hours before withdrawing.
The rest of the crowd moved into the undefended courtyard of the King's Palace and were met by the Scarlet Guard, who denied them access to the palace itself. In an event that probably shocked all involved however, King Augustine ordered his elites to stand down and to allow 50 or so to enter into his palace in order to hear their demands.
For close to three hours the King was insulted and taunted by the crowd, but despite pleas and negotiations set forth by one Sciurus Whirlpaw, the King resisted all calls to drop his vetoes. There were times when Augustine's life was in mortal danger from the crowd, as he was threatened several times but still he refused to yield, claiming that his personal residence was not the place to discuss complex political matters of state.
It was well after 6 PM when Mayor Jerome finally convinced the crowd to vacate the premises. The departing crowd vowed to enforce the Assembly's laws through use of the Commune, which has received an overwhelming show of support from the worker class sections of Rosferia's major cities, and most cities have promised to answer a call to send their quota of National Guardsbeasts if the Commune should issue such a call. As for the stipends for the clergy that have refused to take an oath of allegiance, the Commune is refusing to distribute the allocated funds to said clergy and is instead using them to set up relief for the poor and as a stimulus for the country's economy.
With nothing left to do and the day being extremely humid after torrential downpours had pelted Cosnair that morning, the crowd, disgruntled but placated, drifted back to their homes and businesses. There are rumors that Augustine was forced to don a red cap at the end of the meeting and to drink to the health of his citizens. Such a humiliating gesture on the King's part can not bode well for the leopard monarch.
Mayor Jerome, the hare mayor in charge of Cosnair has been charged with complicity in this demonstration and has been removed from his office. It was no secret that he opened the doors of City Hall and allowed the demonstrators to use it as their base of operations during the march.
City life seems to be returning to normal for now but it remains to be seen how the neighboring monarchs, and Emperor Francis and King Frederick in particular, will deal with this latest debasing of the King of Rosferia....
