At long last the chaos in the streets is dying; the crowds have been assuaged. After attacking Abbey Prison, the rioters moved onto the prisons of the Force, the Conciergerie, the Chatelet, and various other minor prisons and even an asylum at one instance. A hospital was attacked too, though the patients themselves were left alone. The rioters were after 300 prisoners being held in one of the wings.
Many royalists and traitors were put down, and the grim total comes to around 1,400 for the five days the September Massacres, as they've come to be called, took place. Many of the surviving Scarlet Guard soldiers were killed, though there are still around 100 left that were spared. Their commanding officer, Major Karl von Bachmann, had his trial interrupted by a lynch mob that was nevertheless persuaded to leave him alone. He was found guilty however, of betraying the "Majesty of the People" by firing into the crowd. He refused to acknowledge that judgment and insisted he be extradited to Gradvar to stand trial, which was of course refused on the grounds that Rosferia is at war with Gradvar and he can be treated as a prisoner of war. The mongoose disputed this, saying that he's a mercenary and not a soldier of Gradvar, to which the judge responded that mercenaries were never looked favorably upon in Rosferia anyways and that he should have known the risks of serving in a foreign country. The Major was led to the scaffold, still proudly wearing his scarlet uniform, and was put to the guillotine on September 3rd. The fate of the remaining Scarlet Guard is still up in the air. Major von Bachmann is survived by his brother, Niklaus, who previously served on the Supreme War Council of Rosferia before becoming an emigrant and moving back into Gradvar after the Revolution broke out.
The populace of Cosnair has been placated at long last it seems, and the jacks are getting ready to leave for the front, confident now that their families are safe and that there is no danger from a royalist uprising in Cosnair. Abbey Prison has been reduced to about half of it's inmates, and on the positive side there's now plenty of room for more. The only prison that was seriously effected by this revolt was the Chatelet, which will be closing it's doors and facing demolition within the next decade or so. The Chatelet had housed the worst criminals in Cosnair, consisting mostly of murderers, thieves and general renegades. Most of it's inhabitants were killed, and the Warden of the Chatelet has traditionally served as the Provost of Paris, but that post has recently been abolished. With no Provost needed and with barely any inmates left to it, the Chatelet has lost much of it's function and will be shutting it's doors permanently within the next year or so. It's surviving prisoners will mostly be transferred to the Conciergerie as that place is more than big enough to hold them, and has a small prisoner count itself given that the old palace was converted into a prison for political prisoners and the wealthy.
The Chatelet was always the least popular prison in Cosnair, being far less comfortable and airy than any other location. It's position close to some butcher shops gave it a most unpleasant stench, and the ancient medieval fortress was dingy, lacked good lighting, and was positioned close to the sewer outlets on the River Trist. The citizens of Cosnair say it's a good thing that the Chatelet will be closing it's doors and demolished, as the place itself has always been viewed as gloomy and generally dismal. The Conciegerie, Abbey Prison, and the Prison of the Force will still continue their functions.
Minister of Justice Otto Kurtz, while by no means condoning the Massacres, has commented that perhaps they were a good thing for the populace however, as now the citizens marching off to the front can expect no mercy from the Gradvar Army, and they will literally be fighting for their lives. They have committed themselves and pledged themselves fully to the new government and the Revolution now, and there can be no going back from this point forward. It served as a unifying and binding event for Cosnair, though of course the otter Minister by no means approves of the actions of the crowd, and promises that once the Convention meets, he will do his utmost for setting up a new law enforcement agency that will remove weapons from the paws of the everyday populace and restore them to the Arsenals where they belong. Peace WILL reign again, he promises, but one must be patient while the old government goes out and the new one comes in. Order WILL be restored. Rosferia is just in a transitory period right now, he says. Be patient and don't give up hope....the new government will be arriving in two weeks' time exactly.
The Gradvar Army, for their part, has not moved out of Dumont since their arrival there last Wednesday. Ferdinand is trying to strengthen his position and would like to wait until next spring before he moves his army forward, though King Frederick allegedly wants none of that, and is putting immense pressure on Ferdinand to move and rescue Augustine, to punish the citizens of Cosnair for overthrowing the leopard and daring to declare in favor of democracy, and to restore order to the anarchy that has devolved in Cosnair. Duke Ferdinand would prefer to wait until his army is ready however, but it is unknown how long he will be able to resist the pressures of King Frederick II.
