[Private]
Eyes wide with wonderment, Sara Dirachus stepped outside, most of her belongings in her room at the inn in which she was currently residing. The pretty squirrel was still taking everything in. Only two days before, she had arrived in Cosnair, and what she had seen on first sight had taken her breath away. This was about as far away from Kiraia, the small town in the southern part of Rosferia, that she had grown up and worked in, as one could possibly get.
The twenty-six year old had made a wise decision before heading out. That is to say, she had taken her navy-blue umbrella with her. The object shielded a creature from rain, but was not all that common even now, having only really come into general use earlier in the century. The fact that Sara owned one distinguished her from a great many other creatures. She had been able to afford one a few years ago, and now found it invaluable. She smiled as the light rain she had glimpsed earlier began to intensify. She put her umbrella up, before heading out into the streets.
The first thing that the squirrel, a qualified medic since the age of twenty, had decided to do, was look for employment. She had worked for a number of years in such a capacity back in Kiraia, but had passed the reins to her assistant, a harvest mouse by the name of Aril, before she set off on her journey. Now, she padded through the cobbled streets, wondering where the nearest veterinary clinic was.
Sara wasn't afraid of much, but she had to admit to herself that she was more than a tad nervous, feeling a little self-conscious as she walked. Normally one to have a spring in her step, the rodent trod cautiously, unsure of herself in these new surroundings.

Her eyes lit up when she spotted an old hedgehog nearby. The grey-furred creature seemed quite despondent, from what her sharp eyes could make out. Wondering if she might be able to help him, Sara went to over to speak to him, telling herself that she would be as gentle as possible when speaking to the old creature, as she didn't want to upset him further.
Upon reaching him, the medic placed a gentle paw on his shoulder. "Excuse me, sir," she said softly. The hedgehog turned around, and the rodent could see that he had been weeping. His blue eyes were red-rimmed, and unshed tears could be seen clearly within them. He gave a long, shuddering sigh. "Yes...?," he replied, sadness evident in his tone. "I was wondering if you could help me," Sara answered. "I'm new in town, and I was wondering where I could find the nearest medical facility."
"Hmm... in that, I could certainly be of assistance," the hedgehog replied. "My name's Jiras Forleus." "Sara Dirachus," she replied, offering the creature her paw. "Pleased to meet you," she said kindly as it was shaken. "It's a vet you're looking for? Well, you don't seem hurt, but at least you're speaking to the right creature. You see, the establishment a few minutes away from here belongs to me. However..."
He trailed off, but Sara gently pressed him. After a moment, Jiras continued. "Well, would you come in for a while? I'm not supposed to be working today, but I think it's best we find somewhere where we can talk. I have something to tell you, you see. It's something I've been wanting to tell any creature who listened, but... I just haven't been able to pluck up the courage lately." He sighed again. Sara took his paw. "You can tell me if you like. Let's get settled first." So, the two began to make their way to Jiras' clinic.

A few minutes later, the pair reached the front door. Jiras placed the key in the lock and turned it. He opened the door, motioning with a shaky paw for Sara to enter. That the squirrel did, smiling at the hedgehog as she did so. "Thank you," she said kindly.
"Please, take a seat," the vet as he went over and took his own advice, making himself comfortable on a long chair, gesturing to the rodent to sit beside him. "Before I tell you my... secret, I must ask you some questions first. What brings you here, miss Dirachus? You don't seem hurt in any way."
"Sara will do just fine, thank'ee, sir," she replied kindly. "As for why I'm here, well... I'm looking for employment. You see, I left my hometown earlier this year in search of the city. The lifestyle has always appealed to me, though I'm unsure as to why. I am a fully qualified veterinarian, having worked for five years in the field."
Jiras was taken aback. "My, my, this is a rather interesting development. It ties in well with what I was about to say. You see, I have been suffering a crisis of confidence lately. A creature died in my paws not two weeks back, despite my best attempts to save him. I literally did everything I could, but I still lost him.
"To be honest, it's shaken me to the core. To such an extent, in fact, that I have decided to retire. But here before me sits a creature who it seems is well able to follow in my footsteps."

Sara gasped, her bushy tail swishing to and fro at a frenzied pace, both excitement and nerves bubbling up inside her. She hadn't been expecting a job to basically be pawed over to her. She had to admit she was quite pleased, but the squirrel was definitely shocked at this turn of events.
After a while to let the offer sink in, Miss Dirachus finally spoke. "I am honoured that you would consider giving me your former position. It would be most churlish of me to refuse such a kind offer."
Jiras' green eyes brightened at the rodent's enthusiastic response. "Well, here's a creature who's game, make no mistake about it! The clinic will be closed for the next few days, though I can have it shut a little longer if you need time."
"Ah, yes, the next working day is Monday, correct? Well, if you would give me until the first working day of the new year to begin working here... it would suit me quite well. I'm still settling in, as I've said, and I need to get my affairs in order before I anything else, if I'm honest."
"Then it's settled, Sara," the hedgehog responded, shaking her paw in a businesslike manner. "You start here on the first day back after the New Year celebrations: Monday, January 4th. I hope you will settle in well here, and I wish you the best of luck in your new job."
The squirrel returned the pawshake rather heartily, her eyes shining. "Thank you, Jiras. I shall do my utmost to hit the ground running here in Cosnair. You can call in here any time you like, for anything at all. I am indebted to you, sir. Honestly, I am."
There were slight tears in her eyes now as she stood up and turned to leave. The former hedgehog proprietor of the clinic waved her off as she departed. The squirrel's spirits were soaring now. She couldn't believe that this was happening so fast! Sara made a silent promise to herself as she headed for home: letting that kind creature down would be the last thing she ever did. It had not taken long, but it seemed that her time in Cosnair had gotten off to the best possible start.
