Briefing
Background: With Carian Duross's decisive victory last year at Jemappes, Eastern Mordenz was secured for Rosferia. Duross next planned an invasion of Western Mordenz to depose Prince William and claim the entire nation for Rosferia. Moving at the tail end of winter, Duross began a systematic siege of the Western Mordenz border forts, hoping to carry them in time before Kostritz began its counterattack. But the seasons can sometimes be a cruel temptress, and what seemed like the middle of winter actually turned into spring a week later. With the snow on the ground melting, the Kostritz forces were unlikely to just sit back and let Rosferia gobble up their possessions. Under a new commander, Prince Josias the "Whirlwind Axe", the Kostritz army launched a surprise attack into Eastern Mordenz from Gradvar and swiftly inflicted a defeat on half of Duross's army outside one of the Mordenz border forts. Forced to pull back and form up a defensive line outside of Bruxelles, Duross has had to halt his invasion of Western Mordenz and focus on holding on to Eastern Mordenz from Josias's counterattack. Josias, pausing to resupply, has since resumed his advance and threatens to recapture all of Eastern Mordenz unless Duross can stop him. Restoring the morale of his troops, Duross has decided that a good offense is the best defense, and plans to hit Josias in transit. Josias, detecting the movement, has fallen into a defensive position to await the Rosferian onslaught.
Rosferian Situation: Duross is just outside of Bruxelles, the capital of Eastern Mordenz, and must defend the unfortified city if he wishes to hold onto his recent conquests. His goal is to defeat and drive the Kostritz forces from the field.
Size of Force: 45,000
Commander: Carian Duross (otter)
Advantages: Marginally superior numbers
Disadvantages: Inadequate training, shaky morale
Recommended Strategy: The Rosferians should concentrate on the left of the Kostritz line, where Josias is at his weakest. It's a long shot but if they can pull it off they could force Josias back. The odds are 11 to 10 this time instead of 3 to 1 as they were before. Duross has three corps of 15,000 troops each. The left is under Francisco Miranda, the center is under Augustine Phillip, and the right is under General Valence.
---------------------------------------------------------
Kostritz Situation: Josias has a good position behind the Gete River. His right is under the young Archduke Darius (brother of Emperor Francis) and is the strongest portion of the line due to the need to protect his supply line. On the left are two villages of Neerwinden and Oberwinden, with a hill (Mittelwinden) in between them. The Count Sebastian Clerfayt is posted on this hill and in the two towns and is slightly less strong than Darius. The two corps are approximately 20,000 troops each. The Kostritz line runs north to south behind the Gete.
Size of Force: 40,000
Commander: Prince Josias (blue tailed skink)
Advantages: Highly trained, some high ground, good morale
Disadvantages: Slightly outnumbered
Recommended Strategy: Josias has been forced onto the defense for this one, so he must sit and wait out the Rosferian attacks and hope they wear themselves out so that he can resume his advance on Bruxelles. Any ground lost should be counterattacked if possible to try and maintain control.
And now I'll open up various characters that any player may feel free to play for this battle. If you want to play more than one character that can be permissible for this battle, but just let me know before the battle starts. I'd say no more than two characters per author. Also please note that if you do what I'm doing (dividing your characters onto both sides) then you won't get as many points because I have to divide that fairly. However, if you just want to play a character on the other side but want your predominant character to be on one side (say you want to mainly play Rosferia but don't mind helping out on the Kostritz side) then tell me and I will count your points for strictly Rosferia or Kostritz, depending on where your primary character is. Like me, I'm primarily playing as Prince Josias, so my points will be counting for the Kostritz side if they win.
Duross (otter): Skipper (it's his character after all )
Miranda (linsang): Bookity
Augustine Philip (jaguar):
Prince Josias (blue tailed skink): Cal
Count Clerfayt (horned lizard):
Archduke Darius (marbled polecat):
Here's some background on the characters:
Augustine Philip: this is the cousin of King Augustine. Unlike his cousin however, he enthusiastically supports the Revolution along with his father. He is very young, at 22 years of age, and is seeking to learn about the military and gain experience on the frontline as per the wishes of his father, the Duke of Orleans. Commands the Rosferian center. He had a period of success at Jemappes when his troops charged the Kostritz center under Count Clerfayt and drove them from the field. He is beginning to doubt the cause of Rosferia now that his cousin the King has been executed, and growing doubts lead to deep conflicts within him.
Francisco Miranda: Ferlusan mercenary working for Rosferia. He is actually from one of Ferlusan's colonies but has traveled all over the world supporting revolutions against monarchies, and has presently settled in Rosferia to assist with this revolution. Is currently 43 years of age.
Clerfayt: Talented Mordenz officer who chose to join Kostritz (unlike most of his fellow countrybeasts who show resistance to Kostritz occupation). Has the most experience in the Kostritz force (behind Josias) and commands the Kostritz left. Is 50 years old right now. He suffered a reversal at Jemappes last year but is back and looking for revenge. Is a stern disciplinarian but is also popular among his troops.
Darius: The brother Kostritz Emperor Francis, Darius is a younger marbled polecat at the age of 22. Lacks experience but has been studying hard over the winter in order to pick up a thing or two. He has succeeded to command the Kostritz right, and replaced Franz von Lilien after said commander fled into retirement after the defeat at Jemappes. Showing talent at a young age, he still has much to learn about combat, but nevertheless Josias has entrusted him to the command. He has succeeded his adoptive father, Duke Albert, as Military Governor of Eastern Mordenz now that Albert has fled back to the Kostritz capital. He is looking to reclaim his capital and set himself up as Governor with a defeat of the Rosferian forces. Was part of the Kostritz defeat at Jemappes last year, but hopes to successfully succeed his adoptive father and pick up where he left off.
Prince Josias: Nicknamed the "Whirlwind Axe" in his younger years, the aging lizard is now 56. He obtained experience in the Seven Years' War, and in the War to Abolish the Eastern Horde. When the Eastern Horde entered the continent a few years ago Kostritz and Delorn allied to crush them. The Horde's attempt to regain captured Delorn lands was futile and the massive size of the Delorn armies coupled with the talent of their chief commander Suvorov insured a smashing defeat on the Horde. Kostritz's support merely guaranteed that the Horde's progress into the rest of the continent was checked and Josias gained fame for cutting through several units of the Horde, culminating in his greatest battle where he and Suvorov trounced 60,000 of the enemy with only 25,000 of their own. Having been honored with command of the Kostritz force tasked with retaking Mordenz, he aims to drive Rosferia out and then launch an invasion of Rosferia itself to "put an end to the anarchy that has overtaken the nation."
