"Ah yes.....well the Revolution occurred three years ago now. I'll address that one first." Otto stated, "or rather, Eglantine will."
Eglantine cleared his throat, and began. "Well, the finances of Rosferia were quite low after we won our war against Galdea, formerly known at that time as Welkin. I still sometimes refer to them that way of course, force of habit I suppose. Anyways, we had defeated them but paid a heavy price in our finances. It was....bad and the King decided to call an Assembly gathering of all the classes. There were the nobles, the clergy, and the peasants. The peasants of course were the most numerous. Now the peasants objected to the separate voting system, where each class votes privately. They wanted a vote where every class was together. The nobles and clergy of course refused....and so the peasants decided that since they were the majority, why should they bow to the ruling minorities?"
Eglantine paused to clear his throat for a second time. "So, they formed something called the National Assembly, and asked the other two classes to join them. They of course refused, only a few from each class going over. So the King tried to dismiss us, get us to break up, but we all refused. We vowed not to separate until our country was given a constitution, laws that grant equality to all beasts. The National Guard joined in our ideals, and the King called his foreign mercenary soldiers in to his palace to surround Cosnair, but it was only a precaution, he WAS willing to listen to us...."
"B-b-but that's w-w-when our best ally was dismissed by the King!" Camille cut in now, taking up the explanation for Eglantine. "The K-k-king's finance Minister was d-d-dismissed, and he had been really h--h-helping us out. With that....we felt th-th-th-threatened...and s-s-s-so, that's when I jumped on t-t-t-t-top of that table and asked for a s-s-s-storming of the C-c-c-castle Prison in order to obtain weapons and f-f-f-force the King to live in Cosnair where we could directly interact with him." Camille stammered through this section.
"Yep, and so we marched on the King's palace. He ordered his military to stand down, and we were able to get through with a chance opening in the gate." Otto took this part up. "We forced him to come with us back to Cosnair and live here in his palace, not the one outside the city. So yes....that's basically the beginnings of our Revolution. We proceeded to draw up a constitution as we had wanted after that. We at the Cordeliers Club feel that the King is too much of a nuisance and hindrance to democracy though, and should step down from his position.....something of course I highly doubt he's willing to do. Now then....what's next?" Otto thought for a moment, nodding to himself.
"Ah yes....I remember. War with Kostritz yes.....There IS a possibility. The now deceased Emperor Joseph of Kostritz issued a decree that we must restore the King at once or suffer consequences, but he wasn't specific and he passed away before anybeast could further interpret this. His brother, Leopold, is on the throne, though I hear that he himself has fallen ill recently too. He seems to be a bit more friendly towards Rosferia, but our government seems to be wanting to force his paw. You see, our government feels war is necessary in order to galvanize our military and get it back on its paws again, whereas the King desires war in the hopes his country will lose and Kostritz will restore him to his throne. I'm not sure personally how I feel. My counterpart, Milton Dragonis, big crocodile fellow, he's against war as he feels we're not ready, though I do agree that if we won it would really raise morale in the nation. It seems Kostritz is allying with it's classic rival, Gradvar, which spells trouble too as that's my home nation. Now then....the treaty we have with Kostritz......"
Otto reached over and took a glass from a female rat who was passing around the crowds with drinks on a silver salver. He took a swig of the gin and tonic as it turned out to be, and looked back up at Sciurus. "This dates back to about.....40 or so years ago. This was something called the Diplomatic Revolution. We fought a war with Kostritz over the right to rule that nation back then. It began with a dispute over the throne. There were claims that the current Kostritz monarch, a female, was not a legal ruler when she came to power because law forbid the succession of a female polecat in Kostritz, and Gradvar decided to try and seize the Kostritz throne for itself, and we supported Gradvar, hoping to get some territory out of it. Galdea, or Welkin, supported Kostritz, and so it was two against two. Well Kostritz and Welkin ended up triumphing in this war, but Kostritz paid a very high price to Welkin for it's support. Who was monarch then...I believe that was King Jeremy Poynt II, the father of the current monarch of Galdea. Well anyways, he allowed Gradvar to keep the lands it had taken from Kostritz during the war because he saw it as a check to Rosferia's military power. Because of this...Galdea and Gradvar started to become friendly, and Kostritz felt alienated."
Otto took another sip, hoping it wasn't too complicated for the squirrel up until now. "So Kostritz ended up forming an alliance with us, Rosferia, instead, and Galdea ended up allying with Gradvar, a complete switch of the allies in this case as you see. So we've had this alliance against Galdea and Gradvar with Kostritz since 1756, and now....if Kostritz is courting Gradvar for an alliance well....that would break the alliance we currently have with Kostritz. So we've delivered an ultimatum to Kostritz. Either they honor the alliance they have with us, or they break our alliance and go ally with Gradvar, which would spell trouble for us of course. Ah..." Otto sighed, wetting his lips with his drink again. "Hope that wasn't too much for you there. Do you think you got it all?" he asked the squirrel, smiling now as a look of amusement crossed his face.
