The ferret guard gulped a bit as Miri began to toy with him even more. The attractive female was starting to turn the pressure up just a little bit for this watchbeast. His eyes wandered down to where her tail was dragging itself subtly across his boots.
"Well...." he froze as she smiled over her shoulder at him. What was her game? Gain access to information? But if that were the case....how far would she go in coaxing this valuable information out of him? He only hoped not too far....for he was already beginning to crack a bit under her technique.
Monty, for his part, stayed close by, pretending to examine a window that held no real interest for him. He had to give Miri credit....she was using a way that he himself never would have considered she would use and well....more power to her. It did indeed seem to be working. The weasel detective moved in a bit closer to the window, looking for signs of pawpad prints....but so far nothing discernible was detected.
"There was.....something.....I mean....I know what happened that night." the ferret immediately regretted saying this. Blast it! Why had he gone off and done that? Just because she was a pretty face? He inwardly chided himself but it was too late now. "However, I'm not sure I could tell you that Miss." he said, beginning to visibly sweat. "I...I could lose my job after all if word got out." he used as his last ditch defense.
Alright Miri...you've got the upper paw now... Monty thought to himself. One more twist ought to do it.

Miri managed to conceal a sigh of relief as the ferret admitted to knowing what had happened, she didn't know how much longer she could keep this charade up. Miri spun, allowing her eyes to grow large and engaging, locking her eyes on his. "You do? Oh, that would be so wonderful if you could tell me."
Miri nodded her head sympathetically to him as he told her about his job security... or lack of it. She leaned forward, hating herself for doing it, and lowered her voice conspiratorially, so he would have to lean forward a bit to hear her. "How about this, I'll tell you a little about the case, if you tell me what happened that night....." She straightened, just slightly tho, waiting for his answer.

The ferret tried to back up, but he was already against the wall of the building as it was. "Um....well you see...that is....I......" it was hard to tell whether the jill's proximity was making him nervous or if the fact that his job was at stake was getting to him, but whatever it was, the ferret was visibly sweating under both his clothes and his fur.
"Well....what would you say if.....I told you that.....MAYBE....and I do emphasize that word...that just maybe.....some money....changed paws that night....ahem yes...." he said, clearing his throat and speaking in an equally low tone to her. "Maybe....the fact that nobeast saw anything.....was that....we were paid....not...to see...anything." He said, putting emphasis on almost each word that left his snout.
Monty's ears perked up at this news and his eyes widened a bit. A bribe? Somebeast.....had bribed the guards in order to get inside? But.....who could do that. These were the Crown Jewels after all.....and furthermore...if money had changed paws.....it meant that this was....a bit more nefarious than he had at first given credit to. He was tempted to speak up, but he kept his jaw clamped shut. He wanted to see Miri finish this thing all the way through. This guard might have seen who the culprits were after all.....and that might be their first clue in this case.

Miri arched a brow at the statement that money had exchanged paws that night. She paused, stepping back a moment , chewing on her lip, this time unintentionally looking beguiling.
If they had been bribed, maybe there was something more to this than Jal Sylver had thought, She looked up at him again. He seemed terrified that he would spill somthing that he would not be able to take back. MIri smiled softly at him, "That could be a problem if anybeast finds out," She paused, tapping the charcoal stick on her jaw, holding his eyes with hers. "Ok, do you think that you can describe the beast to me?" Miri realized that he might not want to tell her so she stepped closer, but took pity on him, stepping to the side of him instead of right in front of him, besides that way, she could talk to his ears, not his snout.
She stretched up to talk in his ear, and, with him being taller than her, she had to stand on tip toe to reach it "But if you don't want to, I can promise you that now one will EVER find out how we got the information." She dropped back to flat foot, stepping back in front of him, but she made sure that he had some breathing space, locking her eyes on his again.

The ferret was no longer able to resist her inquisitive nature. He felt terribly guilty over what had happened, and he could no longer take her stare. He just wanted this to be over and done with, and since his employment was sketchy without any further crown jewels to guard, he decided discretion was no longer necessary.
"Alright..." He said in a low voice. He looked over at Monty, noticing the white streak of a birthmark he had running down his face. It had to be him...the one he'd been told to watch out for. "It was.....a weasel you see....but he said that he was only the middle beast of this operation....though he DID seem to be in charge that night."
He glanced over at Monty again before looking back at Miri. Monty was listening closely, trying to pick up on what was said, no longer pretending to be looking for clue...the crooks had made a clean getaway anyways. Not surprising, considering the guards had let them in and out.
"He told us to keep quiet, and that him and his group would only be a minute. We let them in, they paid us off, and then they left quietly....oh...yes....one more thing." he reached into his pocket, pulling out a rather dazzling emerald. "The weasel...he left this behind along with a message....for a weasel that he said bore the same white mark upon his face...that scar that I see right now over yonder on your companion's brow."
Monty's eyes widened at this. "You said a white marking on his face!?" he came over to them now. "Was his name Spindrick Sylver?"
"Um...he didn't give his name....but he DID have that exact same mark on his face."
"Then it has to be him..." Monty murmured. He reached out a paw, taking the emerald. "Is this jewel from the collection?" he murmured as it sparkled a bit in the light.
"Why yes....yes it is...one out of twenty."
"I see...and the message?" The ferret handed the detective a wrapped up piece of parchment. "Spindrick allying himself with another....this is grave indeed." he muttered to Miri as he opened the note. Written upon it was his cousin's cursive and flowing script that he could recognize from a mile away. All it said was "Chatelet....The Pit." Furrowing his brow in thought, the weasel began to pace, his tail turning every time he did. "Chatelet....Chatelet.....the Grand Chatelet Prison?" he looked at Miri now. "It's a clue...my cousin wants to play games it seems. It might be a dead lead...but right now it's all we have to go on. The Chatelet is a small fortress in the city, built hundreds of years ago to guard a bridge over the River Trist. It was turned into a prison and after the now demolished and infamous Bastion, has a reputation for being one of the worst prisons in the city. It's dark, the cells out of reach of daylight, and the prisoners there have quite the reputation as cutthroats and murderers. It....could be dangerous to do our sleuthing there but...I'm afraid we don't have any other choice."
He stopped pacing, rubbing his chin with a paw now. "As for the Pit....I'm afraid I don't know enough about the place to know what the Pit is. I suppose we'll just have to find out when we get there." He thanked the guard for his information, and placed the emerald into his vest. "We'll try and locate the jewels before returning them." He informed her. "I'm not sure they'd be safe here anyways." As they began to head off in the direction of the Chatelet, "Tell me Miri....you did pretty well back there. Are you.....used to using that sort of method to extract information from shall we say the male gender?" he asked curiously, not betraying his amusement by keeping his face expressionless so as not to pressure her.

As Miri walked off beside Monty, holding some pins in her mouth as she re-did her hair in a tight know at the top her head. She winced as Monty’s question caused her jab herself. Rubbing her sore head, she felt her face grow warm. “Well, unfortunately a bit TO familiar with it.” She shook her head disgustedly. She staid a bit behind Monty though, not wanting him to see that her face was still pink.
Soon she strode ahead of him raising a paw to signal for a pawsom cab. She glanced back over her shoulder and rolled her eyes as she noted his carefully neutral face. “And you can stop laughing at me.” She huffed as she climbed in the cab. She poked her snout forward enough to tell the driver where they were going, then sat back waiting for Monty to get in. “Any way, most male genderer’s, like yourself sir,” She said, doing her very best not to smirk. “will not take to a female coming in and just asking question after question. ….. especially after some femme like that Countess who had just come through.” The last bit was muttered under her breath, she didn’t want Monty to hear that though.
As they traveled, Miri stared out the window, thinking about the Pit part of Spindricks clue. Mulling it over, she glanced over at Monty. “Didn’t you say that this guy was your cousin?” As she waited, she continued to mull over the bit about a Pit…..

Miri showed initiative by hailing a pawsom for them to take over to the Chatelet. She scolded him for laughing inwardly, and this time it was his turn for his face to redden a little. He hadn't meant it on purpose after all. Hoisting his hind paws up, he got a grip on the paw rail and hoisted himself in to the cab. Strange...seeing these things here. He was so used to them in his home city of Muggidrear after all.
The carriage began to rattle off, it's two wheels rolling over the cobblestoned streets. Monty was turning things over in his mind as she brought up the males not being able to take much interrogation in the style she or Sveltlana had done it. Yes....Sveltlana...the only female that Monty would outright admit had some sort of power over him.
"Well fortunately for the both of us I think, I've been known to be immune to charms of the opposite sex, though um..." he swallowed now, looking at her and then straight ahead. "Sveltlana is a bit different. It's funny because she's not even my taste.....anyways....we're traveling close to the riverfront.....prison territory essentially." he explained. Many prisons in Cosnair were situated in this area. Two on this side of the river, one on the island in the middle, and another on the opposite bank in the other section of the city. The location of the older Bastion prison that had been torn down was behind them, several blocks in their rear.
The King's palace was close to this area as well, and it was no wonder he had ordered the construction of a new palace outside the city limits. Being this close to so many prisons would make any monarch nervous, Monty thought. They were in fact passing close to the Force Prison...a newly converted jail to house the accused before their trial dates. Because it was newer than many of the converted medieval dungeons in the city, it was actually more comfortable and airy than any other prison in Cosnair. The Chatelet would be several blocks ahead....on the riverfront.
The weasel detective realized that the jill had asked him something though, and he shifted his mind off the prison track and onto Spindrick. "Why yes...he is in fact my cousin. Why do you ask?" Monty responded, looking over to her now that he was no longer embarrassed by what he'd said before.

Miri shrugged her shoulders, reaching up and rubbing her neck as she replied, "I was just checking," She pulled her gaze away from the docks around them, studying his face. "Then you would know how he thinks then." Turning back to the window. "Things like what type of o, lets say surprises he might have in in store for us at the prison?"
Just as soon as the word left her mouth, she clapped a paw to her forehead, calling herself several different kinds of louts for not remembering. "Jal Sylver, the note said Chatelet....The Pit. right?" she quickly looked up at him, continuing with barely a pause. "Most prisons have a place for beasts who try to escape, usually the leaders." She paused, hoping that she wasn't over stepping any bounds, then continued with her thought process. "You can't quite stand up or lay out flat, unless you're really small. Could Spindrick have been referring to that Pit?"
Miri felt the cab pull to a stop, and waited for Monty to get out first, he was in charge, after all.

"Yes...in a manner of speaking." was Monty's first answer to the question regarding his anarchist cousin. "Though to be honest....Spindrick is less about traps than he is about outwitting me. We are cousins after all, and though he's had many an opportunity to kill me....he hasn't taken it. No....his goals aren't the slaughter of lives...but drive us out of our homes, wreck our property...or steal it in this case....and attempt to return us beasts to the field similar to how we lived aeons ago. But that won't work....and what he is doing is illegal when it boils down to it."
He nodded at her next question about the Pit at the Chatelet. He listened to what she had to say, but the pawsom pulled to a stop and they had arrived at their destination. "Ah....here we are....interesting idea Miri, might very well be." he told her as he stepped down from the cab and paid the driver the proper sum.
They were standing before an ancient, medieval style fortress, a solitary turret rising up from the dreary faced on the left and two smaller towers framing the gate into the prison. Monty looked up at the old, run down building. It looked quite the dismal place, and those citizens who could did not walk on the side of the street that it was situated on.
"Built many centuries ago, this was orginally a fortress built to a defend a bridge that's directly behind it. There's an island out in the Trist River you see, where another prison is located. That prison used to be the original Royal Palace for the Rosferian King. It was turned into a prison for political prisoners later on though, after the city expanded. The only way to that palace was through this place....the Grand Chatelet, and well now it's become a jail for some of the worst dregs of Rosferian society. It houses mostly murderers or those guilty of violent crimes." he kept a tight hold on his cane as he began to cross the street and head for the front entrance of the jail, the clicking of his cane echoing off the stone walls of that small castle directly ahead of them. "I know you can take care of yourself, but I think we should stay close in there just in case." he murmured to her as he approached the gate.
"Who goes there?" a challenge was called out to them by a solitary guard pacing back and forth in front of the gate.
"I am the Right Honorable Montegu Sylver my good chap, from Galdea, and this is my associate, Miri Talien. We'd like to see the Warden please." was the weasel's polite response. The guard, a squirrel, sniffed.
"Warden? What for?"
"Because we think that something relating to the recent theft of the Crown Jewels may be inside your prison. I'll make it worth your while friend." Monty pulled out a few shillings. It wasn't a bribe, as the weasel believed in repaying for favors. Looking greedily down at the coins, the squirrel nodded, swiped the cash and looked behind his shoulder at another gate guard, inside the portcullis.
"Oy! Go and get the warden out here! Got some well dressed um....visitors!" the other guard nodded and disappeared from sight.
Monty turned to Miri. "I intend to question him about this pit, and if it what you say it is then perhaps the beast incarcerated there knows something about the theft. How about you? Is there anything you'd like to ask him?" Monty covered most of his bases, but even the sleuth overlooked things from time to time. He was starting to become grateful at having another helping mustelid with him, as she had different ways of going about things than he did.

Miri nodded in silent agreement to Monty's suggestion that they stay close, after all, nobeast wants to get jumped in a prison of all places. She followed close at the Jal's heels as he approached the guard at the front gate, waiting with him as the somebody was sent to get the warden.
Miri shook her head at Monty's question. "I'll only ask something if I think you missed something," She answered with a shrug. Tilting her head and shading her eye's as she studied the top of the building, "but I don't think that you will miss all that much sir."
