Cosnair was a city in turmoil. Food riots had recently been suppressed. The lower class were in a starving state, and the new government was striving to do it's best to feed it's citizens. Gradually....bit by bit.....the Legislative Assembly had managed to pawn off the affluent possession of the rich and noble emigrants who had fled the country and were now considered traitors.
But the problems were not fully over yet for the royal city. After the King's Palace had been stormed on the outskirts of the capital, King Augustine XVI had been forced to reside in his winter palace inside the city itself, and though a strong contingent of his guards were still posted on the grounds, he was under virtual house arrest by the citizens of Cosnair. His Crown Jewels had been moved to a warehouse in the city.....but security was quite poor, consisting of only a few night watchbeasts that apparently weren't very observant due to the mere fact that the jewels had ended up missing only about 2 weeks ago now.
There was talk everywhere in the streets. Talk that the Legislative Assembly was even right now debating about going to war with either Kostritz or Gradvar, and Montegu Sylver was just happy that his own nation of Galdea was left out of this mix. He didn't want to become embroiled in a war with Rosferia for any reason whatsoever. They had only stopped fighting about a decade ago, and the weasel detective wasn't too keen on having his nation wage another one. Might have had something to do with the fact that for once....Galdea had actually lost this recent war to Rosferia.....something that rarely if ever occurred.
Rosferia had paid for her victory though. The nation had been left bankrupt, and this brankruptcy was one of the main factors for the Revolution having broken out in Rosferia. For now though, they were on tolerable terms. After a Channel crossing on the packet, Monty and Miri had arrived at Bray, and had then taking a coach into Cosnair, a journey of about a week. But now they were here, their carriage rumbling up to the station and being brought to a halt at the platform.
Every the gentlemammal, Monty disembarked first, had his trunk placed on a dolly, and then held the door and offered to take any of Miri's bags from her to make her alighting from the carriage easier. "You mentioned to me earlier that you were familiar with Rosferia.....is this your first time in the country?" the jack asked her as he stood by to see if she needed help with any of her bags.

Miri jumped out from behind Monty, ignoring his offer to take her bags because she was only carrying a tote bag, and a shoulder bag, and both were a very light weight. She only carried what she absolutely needed with her, anything else, she bought on site.
Miri spun on her heel, so she could take in what there was to see. She didn't like it very much. Her spin ended so she was facing Monty, "Not the first time I've been in country," She said with a shrug, "Never been here though...." She waved the paw that held her tote behind her indicating all of Corsnair, and managed to smack a one of the porters in the side, "Oops, sorry. Didn't see you there." She turned back to Monty. "I've only been on contract in the countryside a couple times... What about you?"

((Congrats! Keep up the good work! )) "Oh yes...I've been here...numerous times I might add...." he said, almost distastefully. "It's a nice enough city I suppose, though it is a bit overcrowded, and what can I say? I'm so intensely Galdean that I really can't say I have much love for the Rosferians, who have almost always been classic enemies of Galdea." he said, shrugging as well with a grin. "Now then, I suggest we get ourselves down to the warehouse where those Crown Jewels were kept. I get the distinct impression that there may not be much time to do our work....for if war breaks out...well let's just say I'd rather not be here when that occurs. Cosnair might soon morph into an armed camp as it were, and leaving the country would be that much more difficult." Monty explained, grabbing his cane and telling the porter to take his trunk to one of the better hotels in the city after slipping him a few shillings. Slipping a top hat upon his head, the weasel led the way, threading his way through the crowds and out of the station and into the streets of the capital of Rosferia. Like Muggidrear, the city was built upon a river, the Trist, and like the river Bronn in Muggidrear, it too flowed to the sea, though Cosnair was much further inland than Muggidrear was. Cosnair also had an abundance of the poor, and those lower class beasts had been heard when then marched on the Kings Summer Palace outside of the city, half starving and ragged, and had forced him to reside in Cosnair itself at his traditionally Winter Palace. Monty always thought Cosnair had an odd smell to it...probably because of so many beasts crammed into one area, but there were good aspects of the city as well....many fine examples of architecture and culture, though as Monty had stated earlier...it just wasn't home to him. The two nations were markedly different enough to cause the jack to begin yearning for the foggy, cobbled streets of Muggidrear already as the two of them made their way down to the warehouse..... -------------------- The warehouse was in an area of town near the seedier sections, but it was kept well enough away from them so that not just any drunks or rowdies could wander in and threaten what had been the storage place of the Crown Jewel after the Revolution had broken out. There were a few attendants out front, and some guards, but right now, aside from some of the royal possessions that had been left behind they had nothing to guard. "First and foremost step..." Monty said as his cane hitting the pavement echoed in the narrow alleyway. "Will be to determine if this was a simple robbery on a spurt of the moment decision or if this was something.....more sinister...as in planned out...!" but his words caught in his throat. He reached out and his paw gripped Miri's arm out of reflex it seemed to stop her from walking just as they were rounding the corner to where the warehouse sat. Up ahead....speaking with one of the guards and acting like her typical seductive and flirtatious self, was her..... her! The only female on the planet capable of getting under Monty's pelt and causing him to become weak kneed and perform at less than his normal capacity was the wicked lemming Sveltlana. She was a Countess from Slattland, a rival island nation close to Dazaria that had struggled from dominance of the seas with Galdea for years. No....NO! Why was she here!? He had not explained much about her if anything to Miri, and so the suddenly unsteady Montegu Sylver might have seemed an odd sight to the jill as he hesitated at the corner of the alley, debating about whether or not to approach Sveltlana or wait until she had left.

Miri jogged along a couple paces behind Monty, this way she could watch out for anything that might get in his way, and more time to sightsee… not that there was all that much there to see. So she was mostly just keeping a bit of space so she could help out if he got into trouble. She wasn’t watching ahead of so she nearly tripped when he grabbed her arm. As it was, she spun around in front of him quite a bit off balance.
Waving her free arm around like a windmill, she managed to stay standing. “What was that all about, Boss?” Miri shook his paw off, and leaned around the corner. To her, it looked like a femme, a very flirty one at that was trying to get passed the very bored looking guards to get into the building.
Miri kept her snout poked around the corner of the building, looking the world like a nosy kit trying to listen in on her parent’s conversations. “Do you know that femme Boss??”

Monty's eyes widened at what Miri was doing. "Um Miri..." he said, trying to pull her back as Sveltlana looked over in their direction. The weasel detective gulped again. "Yes...I do know her." he said quickly, attempting to answer her question and drag her back at the same time. "That's that.....Countess...the one from Slattland....that I told you about."
He could see the lemming stop conversing with the guards and begin to walk over to the two of them on the side street. "Great...now look what you've...." but he stopped, not wanting to outright blame Miri. After all, chances of running into Sveltlana were almost one hundred percent for Monty, and he figured may as well get this over with sooner rather than later.
The lemming femme chuckled to herself as she drew closer. She waved a fan in her face, keeping off the heat of the day. Monty studied her paws....so dainty....so fluid they moved...and her eyes....they captured his gaze and held it for a moment or two before he tried to back away and out of sight around the corner, leaving Miri up front and center.
"Good day to you Montegu Sylver." the female spoke out to Monty first, not what he'd been hoping for. He felt his throat close up at the husky, slightly accented voice of the rodent. He gave her only a semi-nod and weak smile in return. "And you." she turned to face Miri, standing quite close to her. "May I inquire as to what you were peering at?" she asked, narrowing her eyes but not in a threatening way. It was more inquisitive if anything.

Miri matched the smile on Svetlana's face with a bemused grin of her own, stepping back a half pace from her as she did. "Oh not much, their was an... interesting looking male over in the corner there." She said waving a paw in a very vague direction. And there was a guy sitting over there, not doing much, just sitting. "Beyond that, there wasn't all that much to see." She shrugged, but maybe you saw something different?" Her gaze staid light, the only hint that she didn't like this femme was the slight darkening of blue around the edges of her eyes.
Miri cast a discreet glance over her shoulder towards Monty, then shifted her body so she blocked the lemming femme from being able to look directly at him, she had noticed the effect that the femme had on her boss, and this would hopefully give him some time to recover his wits.

Monty was glad for the intervention, glad that Sveltlana was no longer staring directly at him with those hypnotic orbs that passed for eyes. Listening, he took in what Miri was saying. She was smooth...perhaps even a real match for the lemming who seemed displeased and bored with this jill before her.
"Male watching were you? Then I suppose you're not with Montegu over there....pity." she said, smirking now. "Well maybe you should male watch somewhere else...this is a crime scene after all....not much to see here. Besides...I've already gotten all I need."
She threw he heard back and started to walk away, a look of triumph playing over her features as she sauntered around the corner of another street and vanished from sight. "Thank you...you played against her quite well." Monty spoke up now, suddenly standing beside her. "I can never fully face her without getting all....." he sighed. "Well let's not get into that. If she's found something that means there's information to be had here. Miri...I want to see how well you do as an investigator....even if it's not really your thing I'm curious." he said, not explaining himself any further.
"Why don't we head over to that guard there and you do the talking. You don't have to lie to him, the authorities shouldn't be too uncooperative.....or you can feed him whatever story you want, that choice is up to you. See if we can have a look around, and I'll break away to do that while you get any information you can out of the guards." the weasel detective pulled a magnifying glass out of his pocket now. "If that's alright with you that is." he stated, beginning to polish the curved glass off with a part of his coat.

Miri nodded her head as she thought about it. "Ok, why not?" Miri reached into her bag and pulled out a small note pad and a charcoal stick from it as well. She moved away a bit, then stopped, she stepped back into the shadow of the wall. As she did, she reached up and undid the rather severe top-knot style, then re-did it in a looser bun, leaving some strands loose around her eye's. Miri was an attractive femme, she just didn't play it up all that often. Right know she figured changing her hair style might help, especially just after that... well she didn't know what Svetlana was yet,so she wouldn't judge her... yet.
Done with her hair, she placed her tote bag on the ground in a nook in the wall, settled a slight smile on her face, and approached one of the guards, pad and stick ready. "Hi, I'm with the group investigating this... problem with security." She smiled a little, keeping it light and softening her eye's so what she said was more of a joke than anything else.
"Do you think that you could tell me anything about it?" She smiled a bit and tilted her head, hating herself for playing this way...

Monty was a bit surprised that Miri had a whole different side to her as she redid her hair in a different style. She knew how to adjust her looks....and that was always an advantage in sleuthing. Giving those around you a different impression.....it was a nice touch.
Nodding as she headed over to the warehouse guard, he began to circle the premises himself, looking for any signs of forced entry such as broken windows, forced side doors, or even the less obvious signs of removed stonework or damaged masonry.
The guard, a bored looking ferret, took note of the jill with some interest. Here was another good looking one coming his way. Whatever was going on today might not or not be boding well for this jack. He raised his eyebrow at her mention of problem with security. Problem? Well...that was an understatement.....in more ways than she knew.
"Ahem..." he cleared his throat, intending to keep the facts hidden from her just as he'd done so with that other one. "Well it's like I told that Countess, Miss. Not sure why she was here, and not entirely sure about you either, but I was on duty that night and none of us saw a single thing....not one...blasted....thing that we could report to you. We opened the warehouse up the next morning....and the jewels were gone." was his story, though there was just something....off about.
Monty thought so too as he listened in, as he could detect no discernible mode of entry from the outside. However he stayed quiet, intending to let Miri do the talking for now on this one.

Miri didn't feel disappointed when he said that they had seen. She could hear that something was off, not quite what it wasm but he had mentioned 'saw a thing' pretty heavily. Miri reached up and rubbed a paw across the back of her neck to loosen the knots in it. Playacting always did that to her.
She waked around the guard, allowing her tail to drag just a little bit over his footpaws. "Well that's ok, there are other things that you can tell me," She smiled over her shoulder at him, "I mean not all information comes because you see something."
She spun around from looking at the front of the building. "Things like, did you hear anything, or notice a lot of activity, or do you know where there might be records of the floor layout anywhere in town?"
